Definitions

1. A defined collection of characters and their encoded representations used in text processing, such as ASCII or Unicode encodings. Character set mismatches can cause corrupted text, parsing bugs, sorting surprises, and broken data interchange across systems.

   In plain English: The set of characters and encoding rules used to represent text.

   Example: "The import bug came from assuming UTF-8 when the partner feed used a different character set for accented names."
