  1. Controls designed to stop repeated guess attempts against passwords, codes, or other secrets, such as rate limits, lockouts, CAPTCHAs, or IP reputation checks. Good brute-force protection raises attacker cost without harming normal users too much.

    In plain English: Defenses that stop attackers from guessing passwords or codes over and over.

    Example: "The login page added brute force protection after credential-stuffing traffic started hitting all weekend."
