Based

Adjective · Slang · Slang & Abbreviations · Origin: 2010

Definitions

  1. Expressing or holding opinions authentically regardless of social pressure. Originally coined by rapper Lil B to mean confident and true to oneself, adopted by internet culture as a general term of approval for bold or unapologetic stances.

In plain English: A compliment meaning someone is being genuinely themselves and not caring what others think — saying what they really believe.

  2. In tech and programming communities, 'based' is used to approve of technically sound but socially unpopular opinions — like preferring a less trendy technology or criticizing a popular framework. A badge of intellectual independence.

Example: 'She said React is overengineered for most websites and plain HTML with a sprinkle of JS is fine. Incredibly based.'
