How Terms Are Selected

We aim for comprehensive coverage across seven categories: programming concepts, security and hacking, AI and machine learning, DevOps and infrastructure, internet culture, startup and business jargon, and foundational computer science. New terms are sourced from community submissions, technical publications, conference talks, and real-world developer conversations. Each candidate term is evaluated for relevance, longevity, and cultural significance before inclusion.

How Definitions Are Written

Every definition balances technical accuracy with readability. We start with the precise, canonical meaning of a term as understood by practitioners, then pair it with a "plain English" explanation that any reader can follow. Definitions are reviewed for correctness by subject-matter contributors before publication.

Origin Stories

Where possible, we trace the origin of each term to its earliest documented use. Our research draws on primary sources including academic papers, mailing list archives, Usenet posts, conference proceedings, and published interviews. We identify who coined the term, in what context, and how it entered wider use.

Etymology Timelines

Many computing terms have shifted in meaning over time. Our etymology timelines document the evolution from coinage to modern usage, marking key inflection points: when a word jumped from one community to another, when its meaning narrowed or broadened, or when a corporate rebranding changed public perception. Each timeline event is anchored to a specific year or period.

Comparisons

Our 69 comparison articles provide structured side-by-side analysis of commonly confused terms. Each comparison covers key differences, typical use cases, analogies for easier understanding, and guidance on when to use each term. Comparisons are written to resolve real ambiguities that developers and learners encounter daily.

Quality Standards

Every entry in HackerDictionary is held to five standards:

  1. Accuracy: Definitions must be technically correct and verifiable.
  2. Accessibility: Content must be understandable to both experts and newcomers.
  3. Cultural context: Terms are situated within the communities that use them.
